Police vs BOS Northallerton Police entertained Brompton on Swale in the semi final of the Frank Bainbridge (Division 1) cup at Newby Wiske. The match started with both teams having an equal amount of possession but not creating any clear cut chances. The first real chance fell to Adam Bramley after 15mins but Brompton keeper Gary Reed made a fine save in blocking his shot. Police went close again after 26mins when defender Chris Pattison burst through the centre and fired in a fine 20yard shot which hit the post with keeper Reed well beaten. Five minutes later Ben Barr set up Bramley on the right of the penlty area and he shot wide of the far post. Four mins before half time a cross ball from the left was chased by full back Pattison who went for the ball with keeper Reed. Pattison was injured in the tackle and had to leave the field. He was taken to hospital as a precaution where it was found he had sustained a broken leg. The second half started very much like the first with both teams cancelling each other out and not many clear cut chances being made. Police were down to ten men after 70mins when Ian Rayner was sent off for a second bookable offence. The deadlock was finally broken after 82mins when Police were awarded a free kick on the edge of the Brompton penalty area. Sam Vernalls took the kick which keeper Reed saved but could not hold and Bramley nipped in to score from the rebound. With two mins remaining Brompton equalised when Steve Collins crashed in a 25yard thunderbolt which Police keeper Alistair Johnson got a hand to but could not prevent the shot flying in to the top corner of the net. The game went in to extra time with both teams competing for the ball but with very few clear cut chances being created. Ben Barr had a good chance when keeper Reed was caught out upfield but his shot from just inside the Brompton half went woefully wide. The game went to penalties with Brompton taking the first kick. Both Brompton and Police scored their first three penalties. The player taking Bromptons fourth penalty hit the bar and Police fourth penalty taker shot over the bar. Bromptons fifth penalty was saved by keeper Johnson and it was left to Nigel Pepper to score Police's fifth penalty and take them into the final against North Yorkshire Unison who also won on penalties in the other semi final. |
