BOS vs Stowesley (Cup) League Cup Semi- Final Brompton OS v Stokesley This match saw Stokesley, unbeaten in the last 6 league and cup matches, playing Brompton, who had beaten relegation threatened Rountons 6-5 the previous week, for a place in the League Cup final and a prospective match against either Northallerton Police or Unison. The opening 5 minutes saw the ball swing from end to end, with few clear cut chances for either team. The breakthrough came for Stokesley after about 15 minutes when a corner was cleared only as far as Chinola who, from 20 yards out, drilled a half volley into the bottom right hand corner of the net past a helpless David Beckham in goal. That goal seemed to spur Stokesley on, and they started to produce a few nice passing moves down the wings and that resulted in the second just after 20 minutes when a nice ball through on the Stokesley left put Craig Hutton clear, who doesn't miss those sort of chances, and calmly chipped over the advancing keepers legs into the bottom right hand corner. Surely another sign to manager Neil Fawcett that Hutton wants the centre forward spot for himself after starting at left wing-back again. Stokesley continued to cause Brompton problems, although still not in the form that has seem them draw with team in form Unison and beat the Police in the last two games. However, Brompton started to create a few openings of their own, and after about 35 minutes a ball crossed in from their right hand side was nodded into the net only to judged offside by the linesman much to the dismay of the Brompton players and fans, who were not as animated as usual - could this be due to the impending FA enquiry? Also missing from the Brompton fold was the perm haired sub in the boiler suit, much to the disappointment of the visitors. Five minutes into first half injury-time, Brompton made Stokesley pay for not closing down quick enough and Bromptons tall centre back, known only as Gary?? hammered a wind assisted cross/shot from 40 or so yards out into the top left corner of the Stokesley net over a hapless Stainsby in goal. The half-time whistle was blown straight after the kick-off to see Stokesley lead 2-1 at the break. HALF TIME: BROMPTON OS 1 - 2 STOKESLEY The second half saw Brompton come out strongly pushing for the elusive equaliser, both teams having already been knocked out of the divisional cup at semi-final stage last month and not wanting to be disappointed in both. However, their early pressure failed to show and Stokesley restricting Brompton to shots outside the area and, with the safe hands of ex-schoolboy international Stainsby, were easily dealt with. Stokesley started to come into the game again, but there were still no good, clear-cut chances to show. Half way through the second half, Brompton had their best chance to equalise when a long throw from their right was tossed into the area and Thomas Ptak turned and shot from a tight angle that was parried by the keeper and fell to a Brompton midfielder on the edge of the area only for his follow up to be blocked by Richie and cleared. Then an inspired tactical move (??), by the Fawce, just after the hour mark saw the injured Chinny replaced by returning captain Martin Corner and the substitution paid instant dividends as a shot that was saved and the ball ran to Corner who dispatched a cheeky lob over the stranded Becks with his first touch. Stokesley then took control and scored a fourth, when a goal kick was flicked on by BushBishlak and Left Pegger ran into the area only to be floored by Bromptons hero to villan scorer Gary. After a battle between Hutton, Pughie and BushBislak about who was to take the penalty, it was Pughie who stepped up to smash the ball down the centre and give Stokesley an unassailable 4-1 lead. After his heroics of diving headfirst over Gary's leg, Left Pegger left the field with a slight knock to be replaced by "deadly from 30 yards, rubbish from 6" Largie. And a couple of minutes later, another casualty for Stokesley as Hutton, suffering from a bad back, was replaced by Shaun Harrison to steady the ship. Craig must have felt his point proven for the run-in with yet another goal. 5 minutes from time, Brompton decided they had enough of football and decided to play rugby and this was shown when Ptak demonstrated an excellent shoulder block on Scouse John, already suffering from an elbow to the mouth, and left winger Ginge recieving a yellow card for a nasty ear pulling incident. The only thing left in the match was for Fawce to laugh uncontrollably at the Brompton right winger diving blatantly in the area only second to that of the John Smiths advert and lacking Harrys scream. Stokesley now march on hoping for their first piece of silverware after a long wait. TOP BOMBING! BROMPTON OS 1 - 4 STOKESLEY Stokesley Team: Stainsby, Nighsty, Richie, Fawce, Hutton (Shaun), Scouse John, Harry, Chinola (Corner), Pughie, Left Pegger (Largie), BushBislak Subs: Graingey
