Hibs vs Police

Northallerton Police travelled to Great Broughton to take on Great Ayton Hibernians (the Hibs) in this top of the table division one fixture.  Police were 2nd and The Hibs 3rd  before the game.

Hibs kicked with the strong wind in the first half and got off to a great start  after 5mins when a corner from the left was headed towards goal by Paul Aldridge.  Craig Johnson got a touch on the ball as Police keeper Danny Yates appeared to have saved the shot.  The referee, however, adjudged the ball had crossed the goal line and gave the goal much to the dismay of the Police players.

This early goal spurred Hibs on and they had most of the play for the first 30mins with Johnson and James Middleditch causing problems for the Police defence.  The Police defence held firm and after 35mins Police equalised when Adam Bramley put Simon Caukwell through on the left and his fine cross was converted by Sam Vernalls from 10 yards.

Three minutes into the second half Police took the lead when Neil Foster played the ball to Ben Barr who passed inside to Vernalls who went past two men before scoring with a strong right foot shot from 18yds.

Three mins later Police keeper Yates prevented Great Ayton Hibernians from equalising when he produced a fine save from a Paul Storey 20yard shot.

Police increased their lead after 58mins when a fine passing move between Curt Tasker, Ian Rayner, Foster and Caukwell ended with Bramley firing in a 15yard right foot shot which Hibs keeper Clive Dowson could not hold and Vernalls nipped in to put the rebound in the net to complete his hat trick.

Hibs hit back four minutes later when Middleditch hit a fine right foot shot from 20 yards which deflected off a defender and was going into the corner of the net only for Yates to make a fine full length save and turn the ball for a corner.

Police hit back and only a fine clearance off the line by Kris Smith prevented Bramley increasing the lead for the Police.

Hibs had another good chance after 68mins when a free kick was headed wide at the far post by Aldridge.

After 77mins Police keeper Yates was in action again when he made a fine double save from Johnson at the far post.

Both teams played some good football in the windy and showery conditions.

Craig Johnson took the man of the match award for The Hibs with Sam Vernalls taking it for the Police.
